About Master Prejean

I’m Carla Prejean, born Covington, from Sulphur. I’ve lived here my entire life, so this is home. Together with my husband, Jim, we own and operate ATA Martial Arts.

I began my martial arts training in 1982. The American Taekwondo Association (ATA) certified me in 1985 to teach. Training and teaching are VERY different. I’ve often heard the phrase, “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach”. It doesn’t work that way in Taekwondo. I currently hold the rank of 6th Degree Black Belt, and am preparing to test for my 7th Degree. My Instructor, Eternal Grand Master H.U. Lee is quoted, “Today not possible, tomorrow possible”. (You can read more about him in another area of this website). This is the philosophy I use when teaching. Anyone can learn – tomorrow they will learn more!

I love to teach. I attended McNeese State University for Piano Pedagogy – teaching piano. (I’ve played piano for 30+ years.) However, after beginning Taekwondo training, I was hooked. I still play piano at my church. I am the pianist and hand bell coordinator at Houston River Baptist Church, north of Sulphur, and that commitment is an entirely different story, but one that defines my life. So… I began teaching Taekwondo in 1985 and never looked back. I continue to educate myself and have realized there is always more to learn.
